Review of Last Week:
We had two meets last week. The Freshman Championships and the Shoreline City Championships. Many athletes excelled and the future of Shorewood Track and Field looks bright. I’m especially impressed with the way our athletes are competing, given some of the nasty weather conditions last week. We need to continue to build depth in the throws and field events, especially on the boys side. I’m hopeful we see more athletes from other sports on the track team next year. When we look at the results of meets like the City Championships, we are very close, yet missing key athletes from the football team, basketball team, etc. These athletes are scoring points for Shorecrest and Kings!

Henry Thomas - for hard work, always willing to do what the coaches ask of him, and going the extra mile to compete. Living the values of: 1. Sense of urgency. 2. Responsibility to himself, teammates, coaches, parents and Shorewood. 3. Embracing and effectively deal with conflict.

Review our responsiblities:
In addition to the general, physical/training priorities we set out to achieve, there is a set of goals that supersede these goals all year long, no matter where we are in the training year. These are perhaps more important to us as a coaching staff than the physical goals

1. Learn to live with urgency: Prepare to compete, compete in practice. Every minute of our practice session is a race against the clock to see who can learn more, gain more, who can cut one more second in their race, on add one more inch in their jump or throw.

2. Understand your responsibility to yourself, your teammates, your coaches, your parents and Shorewood: You are accountable to do YOUR job, as well as assisting where you can to better allow your teammates and coaches to do theirs. Sometimes, one person needs a small push to get going in the same direction as everyone else. The more this comes from an athlete instead of the coach, the better. (relate to my frustration this week…I expect you to engage without me badgering you) — some of you think everything revolves around you – what I get from you when challenged is an excuse. I don’t care about excuses.. not my problem. Be here, do the work. DO YOUR JOB.

3. Embrace and effectively deal with conflict, coaching, and competition: Only through constant critiquing and instructing will you improve in training. This is not as simple as getting you to properly lift weights, throw, jump or run. You also need to be notified when your effort is insufficient. Through constantly challenging you, and upholding our standard of performance, we cultivate a competitive atmosphere in which no one can feel comfortable when they are shown up. Everyone looks to out-perform the next person, even during warm ups, and everything we do.

Wow – we’re proud of the way the team prepared and executed the plan last week. Shorewood had the top combined team score at the Terrace Twilight, and the Girls took home the inaugural “Women’s 1st Place Team” trophy! See the last week review below for details. This week we have the same Thursday (vs Mount Lake Terrace and Kamiak), Saturday (vs Eason Invite) schedule. It’s important you follow the plan and get the rest you need to recover from the additional load. We know many of you fail to follow the guidelines and recommendations we provide. We know many of you are doing too much… This might be soccer, baseball, you name the sport, working, etc. This time of year we really start to see the degraded performances in practice, meets and this sometimes leads to injury. PLEASE communicate with your event coach so we can manage the load! This is a frustrating time of the year for the coaches, we attempt to put the best team on the track to compete in the Thursday and Saturday meets. Some of you have other priorities that affect our ability to do this. The coaches and your teammates are depending on you, again, EARLY communication is the key.

Review of last week:
I’m torn between excitement and disappointment. The weather hampered our progress a bit this past week. Not much we can do about this except take it for what it is and do the best we can. I liked the way we prepared and competed in Thursdays meet vs Cascade. We had 100 athletes entered in the meet. This was our first away meet and I always have some reservations. Our student athletes stepped up! EVERYONE was at the bus on time, prepared to compete and took care of business. That’s the exciting part. The disappointment…. we only had 35 athletes at practice on Friday and only 15 athletes at the optional practice on Saturday. I suppose I could say, the weather was nasty on Friday and there was no school on Friday, what should I expect? I don’t know what else to say, I have higher expectation of our student athletes. If this was drill, football, volley ball, basketball, swimming, soccer or you name this sport. I’m betting a better than 30% turn out. The good, from a coaching standpoint, many of the student athletes who were at the last two practices are the same ones who are improving the most and are scoring points in the weekly meets. Coincidence?

Week four is done and we start week five. For some of our athletes we are hitting the mid point of the season. How can this be? The track season in the State of Washington is thirteen weeks long from day one to the conclusion of the state meet. All athletes who are eligible have an opportunity to compete in the eight weekly meets. The weekly meets finish in week ten. Week eleven is the WESCO South Championship meet, week twelve is the 4A District One Championship meet and week thirteen is the State Championship meet. We hope to move as many athletes forward into League, District and State. The reality is each step is more and more competitive. What about the three Saturday invitational track meets? Who competes in these meets – Depending on the meet our top one or two athletes in each event will compete plus relays. Some of the meets have minimal standards some do not. Watch for more information here as these meets come up.

Thought for the week:

Our Track and Field program is based on many core values. The most important is the foundation core value of integrity. I trust each and every one of you, the staff and myself to act with integrity. What’s integrity?

Integrity: “Doing the right thing when no one is watching”

By acting with integrity in whatever you do, that solid foundation is reinforced for your athletic, personal and professional life.

Examples: – getting here on time, the attendance, doing your workouts, not breaking the athletic code, resting when we ask you to rest. Do it with integrity.

Review of last week:
Meet week number two down! Another busy administrative week, we distributed the new uniforms and jackets to 125 student athletes, (see the pictures below), took team and individual pictures, had a parent meeting and our second track meet. The weather cooperated for the most part and we got a lot accomplished. The kids effort in working the training plan are paying off in the results. We had some strong performances and the kids competed well! (66 season PR’s for the Boys, 33 season PR’s for the Girls) Keep working the plan…….
